With a gun at the ready they watch over goverment buildings and private residences. The watchmen in Northern Iraq consist of private security guards, police officers or Peshmerga, the armed Kurdish fighters, who supported the U.S. Army during the Iraq war. Their main weapon is the Russian rifle kalashnikov. The following photographs were taken in the cities of Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk and Erbil.
